  • Update on VOS Foundation recent trip to Nigeria

Update on VOS Foundation recent trip to Nigeria

Our mission is simple and builds on Vivian’s legacy as a devoted and philanthropic teacher. VOS Foundation inspires and empowers underprivileged young people in regions of Nigeria through the provision of educational supplies, delivery of programs and activities.

Sadly the recent UN report into children out of school across the world, showed that about 13.2 million young people are out of school in Nigeria, with a rising trajectory unless urgent action is taken. This is where as a charity we can add our effort to the pool of actions that are being taken by many other non-governmental organisations in and outside of Nigeria, to break the narrative of life of poverty for many children and their families.

What have we done so far?

Apart from ensuring we place the charity on a sound, transparent, accountable footing, we have started to support schools in Nigeria, starting with the school that Vivian taught at before she died. During our recent trip to Nigeria we have been able to strengthen our relationship with schools and educators. This gave us the opportunity to have discussions with policy makers, academics and beneficiaries about the broader challenges and issues currently facing young people; whilst trying to understand their varying educational needs and how best our charity can support them in tackling some of the issues.

    We did we meet with?

    – Mr Titus Adenuga, Principal of Ajayi Crowther Memorial Senior Grammar School, Bariga and the Senior Management Team

    – Otunba Abayomi Olusanya – The Tutor General & Permanent Secretary of Education District 11, Maryland, Lagos State

    – Mrs Nike Oresanya, Principal of Oregun Junior High School, Ikeja

    – Sister Helen Nwoko of Our Lady of Apostles primary School, Lagos

We all know that effective relationships can only be achieved where all parties concerned are clear about the parameters in which their relationships are based. Signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the management of Ajayi Crowther was also a key focus of our trip and we were pleased to see the school was keen to go into agreement with us.

Investing in the education of young people is the bedrock of our charity, so it was pleasing to see the positive responses we had from teachers and students alike during our presentation  to Ajayi Crowther of the five laptops donated to VOS Foundation by Elextrolux UK. This consequently led to the school been designated by Otunba Abayomi Olusanya as a Computer Coding Hub.

We were also delighted to have witnessed the successful participation of Ajayi Crowther students at the science and technology Expo organised by the National Television Authority Channel 10 at Tejuoso. The expo was aimed at discovering and developing creativity and talent of young people in Nigeria. The 2018 Edition of the competition was held in two stages.

Ajayi Crowther students took 1st position in the 2018 rotary Club of Gbagada Quiz Competition for Somolu Zone.
